One thing I have found is that I have a sincere love of poster design. The good stuff. Not just the printed poster of today’s young hunk or bombshell, those are cheesy and redundant. Same face, slightly different name. Those posters can stay in the Wal-mart poster rack for sure. I am talking about TRUE poster design. A strong graphic overtone with a dedicated thought to typography, it’s placement and hierarchy. Simply put, that is beauty to me.
A well pulled off poster communicates two things. The actual event, what’s going on, where it’s going on etc, the pertinent information. However, it also makes you forget it’s just a poster. It makes you study it, look at it, like it’s one of those things you never noticed before, or how it got there. As if something magical happened and it showed up on the local businesses window out of no where. It makes you question who did it and mostly, “Why didn’t I think of that!” There are very few of these in the world, let alone Northwest Arkansas. We are blessed to be in a very cultural area of the country, with lots of influence from multiple corners of civilization. The Arts have been very good to us lately in these parts. Thanks to some of the work area organizations have done (see: Fayetteville’s Creative Economy Action Group) our area has really pushed the significance and importance of all things creative.
I am thankful for not only the efforts of all those people involved in pushing our creativity in Northwest Arkansas, but that it’s happening all around us and in my life time. If you are around the Bentonville Square this week take a look at any number of windows of the businesses surrounding this treasure. There you will see a well designed poster by Eric Miser. If anyone else has comments or samples of solid poster design, please feel free to share them!
